With its lightweight carbon fiber shell to help reduce fatigue, or is dual density EPS liner Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is a rigid, energy absorbing foam. In the helmet industry, EPS is the most common means of energy management to protect the brain. Generic EPS is often referred to as “Styrofoam” (a trademarked name owned by the Dow Chemical Company). The ECE 22.05 (Economic Commission for Europe) standard is quite a bit younger than the current DOT standard, and in many ways offers a more comprehensive battery of testing than its American cousin.
